How it works

Tailored to your learning needs

Obesity medicine is evolving rapidly. New pharmacotherapies, emerging clinical trial data, updated guidelines, international consensus statements and changing models of care mean there is always something new to integrate into clinical practice.

Rather than following a fixed curriculum, each ObesityMed session is shaped by the learning priorities of the participating GPs. Before each session, participants submit the topics, questions or areas of practice they would like explored. These may include:

+

Recent evidence from clinical trials and real-world practice

+

Current, new and emerging obesity therapies

+

Australian and international guidelines and consensus recommendations

+

Practical approaches to the management of overweight and obesity

+

GLP-1 based and other pharmacological therapies

+

Bariatric surgery and surgical treatment pathways

+

Challenging clinical concepts or areas of uncertainty

+

Discussion of de-identified clinical cases to illustrate principles of evidence-based care

Across the program, we cover the pathophysiology of obesity, its complications, and the management of associated comorbidities — alongside the practical application of treatments, including medical and surgical interventions, and current dietary, psychological and exercise guidelines, ensuring learning extends across a genuinely multidisciplinary framework.

Sessions run in beginner, intermediate and advanced streams — you choose the stream and time slot that best matches your experience and learning goals. Every session is designed to provide practical, evidence-based education that can be translated into everyday clinical practice.

There's no need to choose just one session. Access to ObesityMed is unlimited — attend a single session or come back to many. As the evidence and therapies in this field keep evolving, most GPs find it useful to check in periodically and upskill, rather than treating it as a one-off session.

Obesity Medicine

Educational scope

ObesityMed is a tailored educational program designed to support GPs' continuing professional development in obesity medicine. Sessions are intended to facilitate discussion of the current evidence base, evolving clinical practice and general management principles.

Important — please read

ObesityMed does not provide direct medical advice for your patients.

The program does not provide patient-specific medical advice or individual case management. Any clinical cases discussed must be fully de-identified and are used solely for educational purposes. Responsibility for all clinical assessment, decision-making and patient management remains entirely with the treating clinician.

Funding & independence

Independent Medical Education

ObesityMed is Independent Medical Education (IME) — funded by the pharmaceutical industry on a non-exclusive basis, and developed and delivered independently of any sponsor. Educational content, direction and discussion are determined solely by MedSurg Weight Loss and its educators.
